This map shows the expansion of Germany and its allies – the Axis Powers – just before and during WWII. The borders are those of 1943, when the German expansion was at its height. After the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943, the territories that had been held by Italy were taken over by Germany. Likewise, the territories held by Bulgaria were taken over by Germany in 1944. The German occupation of large parts of Europe has led to a large number of occupation issues.
